Because some RP I'm involved in demanded Dirk in a tux... Had to trade in the red hat for a cummerbund.

Dirk Gently is copyright Douglas Adams, no matter how much I RP him.

Well I wouldn't have pictured him in a tux if not for RP demanding it, but otherwise I'm pretty settled on his look. I'd love to give him a mustache but I've never been able to make it work.
How do you picture him?

Not as plump, kind of average, with a bit of a belly on him. Again average height, the glasses go perfect; I imagined something like that too, same hair, tendancy to dress in different shades of brown and an old brown trilby hat, possibly with some grey stripes - the kind worn by your grandad and Samuel L. Jackson.

Which reminds me excellently of that bit in one of the end of the books (I forget which one) about the man who does the horoscope in the paper, who knows Dirk and dosen't like him, and posts in Dirk's horoscope that, 'You have a stupid hat that you should be ashamed of'.
Oh, how that made me laugh..

I probably wouldn't draw him as heavy if I wasn't drawing him so stylized and cartoony, but he's described as being at least somewhat overweight with glasses. No skinny Dirk! But the hat...
It has to be a big red hat. In the first book his enormous red hat is described in detail. It's kind of a trademark.

It's part of the major physical description when Macduff's in his office for the first time. I assumed ever after that the ridiculous hat referred to is the same red hat with an enormous brim, unless he's got more than one ridiculous hat...

Yup. This is the first book, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. I prefer Long Dark Teatime of the Soul because it's from Dirk's perspective, but that also means it doesn't have as much physical description.
